Uncovered Text Messages Nail Kavanaugh For Tampering With Witnesses And Lying Under Oath

Last updated on November 21st, 2018 at 03:18 pm

Newly revealed text messages exclusively obtained by NBC News provide evidence of yet another lie Brett Kavanaugh told during last week’s hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Worse, the messages also appear to show that the judge was tampering with witnesses that could potentially corroborate some of the allegations against him.

According to NBC News, Kavanaugh and his legal team “were communicating behind the scenes with friends to refute the claim” of sexual misconduct from Deborah Ramirez  before the allegations even went public.

More from the report:

The texts between Berchem and Karen Yarasavage, both friends of Kavanaugh, suggest that the nominee was personally talking with former classmates about Ramirez’s story in advance of the New Yorker article that made her allegation public. In one message, Yarasavage said Kavanaugh asked her to go on the record in his defense. Two other messages show communication between Kavanaugh‘s team and former classmates in advance of the story.

The texts also demonstrate that Kavanaugh and Ramirez were more socially connected than previously understood and that Ramirez was uncomfortable around Kavanaugh when they saw each other at a wedding 10 years after they graduated. Berchem’s efforts also show that some potential witnesses have been unable to get important information to the FBI.

Berchem’s memo outlining her correspondence with Yarasavage shows there’s a circle of Kavanaugh friends who may have pertinent information and evidence relevant to the inquiry who may not be interviewed.

Kavanaugh just crossed yet another line

The fact that Kavanaugh and his team were working privately to get others to refute the claim before The New Yorker published it shows that the judge was lying under oath when he told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he knew nothing about it until after it hit the press.

It also shows that Kavanaugh was reaching out to possible witnesses against him – highly inappropriate behavior for a sitting judge, much less a man who wants to be confirmed to the Supreme Court.

As NBC News reported, “In a series of texts prior to the publication of the New Yorker story, Yarasavage wrote that she had been in contact with ‘Brett’s guy,’ and also with ‘Brett,’ who wanted her to go on the record to refute Ramirez.”

During the committee hearing, though, Kavanaugh told Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch that he first heard of Ramirez’s claims “in the New Yorker story.”

Given what we now know based on NBC News‘ reporting, this appears to be a straight up lie. Not only did Kavanaugh know about the claims, but he was trying to get to witnesses who could potentially corroborate them.

Based on the standards set by GOP Sen. Jeff Flake in his ’60 Minutes’ interview on Sunday, Brett Kavanaugh‘s Supreme Court nomination should be dead.
