In addition to the allegations of sexual assault against Brett Kavanaugh, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders called on the FBI on Saturday to include the judge’s lies in their investigation.
In a letter to Sen. Chuck Grassley, the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, Sanders wrote, “In order for the FBI investigation regarding Judge Brett Kavanaugh‘s nomination to be complete, it is imperative the bureau must not only look into the accusations made by Dr. Ford, Debora Ramirez and Julie Swetnick, it should also examine the veracity of his testimony before the Judiciary Committee.”
“Lying to Congress is a federal crime,” Sanders said. “The FBI must examine the veracity of Kavanaugh’s statements under oath in addition to the sexual assault allegations against him.”
Not only does the potential 2020 presidential candidate want the FBI to look into the lies Kavanaugh told under oath, but he also doesn’t want the investigation to be limited to a week if the bureau needs more time.
“If you are concerned with a delay in this confirmation process,” Sanders said, “Remember that Senate Republicans refused to allow the Senate to consider Merrick Garland’s nomination to the Supreme Court for nearly a year.”

Kavanaugh is under fire from multiple angles
While the country is appropriately captivated by the sexual assault allegations against a man who could spend the rest of his life on the Supreme Court, the lies he told while under oath during his temper tantrum testimony are also worth examining.
As the Vermont senator noted, lying to Congress is a federal crime, and it appears Kavanaugh did so multiple times during his portion of the hearing– about matters both large and small.
Not only should the FBI follow all angles necessary to get to the truth, but as Bernie Sanders wrote on Saturday, they should be allowed to take as much time as they need.
