On the heels of Democratic Senator Diane Feinstein calling for a halt in the Kavanaugh confirmation, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) joined her, citing the “serious and credible allegations” that must be thoroughly investigated. “For too long, when woman have made serious allegations of abuse, they have been ignored. That cannot happen in this case.”
“Senator Grassley must postpone the vote until, at a very minimum, these serious and credible allegations are thoroughly investigated. For too long, when woman have made serious allegations of abuse, they have been ignored. That cannot happen in this case,” Schumer wrote in a statement sent to PoliticusUSA.
Schumer pointed out that Kavanaugh already has a record of being less than honest:
“Judge Kavanaugh’s credibility has already been seriously questioned because of his answers regarding Manny Miranda, Judge Pryor, and other issues during his time in the Bush White House, and now his credibility is even more suspect. To railroad a vote now would be an insult to the women of America and the integrity of the Supreme Court.”
It is Kavanaugh who has a credibility problem here. His alleged victim has passed an FBI-administered lie detector test, and has two separate therapy note sessions from years ago backing up her claims, in addition to her husband recalling her citing Kavanaugh specifically.
Professor Ford came forward Sunday morning with a horrifying account she referred to as a “rape attack” by Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Senator Feinstein (D-CA) quickly called for his confirmation to be put on hold until the FBI conducts an investigation.
There is no way around this for Republicans – Kavanaugh is a problem for them. He might well be innocent of sexual assault, but for Republicans to refuse to even investigate and to confirm without even peeking under the hood, instead relying upon a handy letter Kavanaugh just to happened to have signed by 65 women who say he’s so wonderful (btw, this is totally irrelevant because many “wonderful” men have committed horrible acts of sexual and physical violence against women). Why are they so quick to throw women under the bus?
American women deserve a Supreme Court justice who is not credibly accused of sexual assault. This is not hard.
But Republicans won’t care, and the White House has already said they won’t revoke the nomination. Of course they won’t- sexual assault is not a problem for the Trump White House or the Republicans in Congress. They simply do not care about women or children or male victims.
But voters do.
