Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) sat down with President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh on Tuesday but remains convinced he is a threat to equal justice under the law as well as concerned by the way Republicans are trying to skip the entire vetting process on their nominee.
“Today, I sat down with Judge Kavanaugh to ask him a number of pointed questions about this nomination process and about his record,” the Democratic Senator said in a statement sent to PoliticusUSA. “After that meeting, I remain convinced that he is a threat to the promise inscribed above the Supreme Court, “Equal Justice Under Law,” and disturbed by the hasty and incomplete process of this nomination.”
“The decision to rush through this process without providing the Senate—or the American people—sufficient time or information to fully consider this nomination is unacceptable,” She continued, citing the fact that Senate Republicans blocked the release of “millions of documents from Judge Kavanaugh’s career.”
“Furthermore, nothing in my meeting with Judge Kavanaugh changes my read of his record—he is well outside the mainstream and threatens hard won rights and protections for all Americans. Judge Kavanaugh has expressed his hostility to Roe v. Wade and his statements make clear he is a threat to the ACA. He has routinely sided with special interests and big corporations against civil rights, workers’ rights, and environmental protections. And with a President who regularly disregards the rule of law, it is especially troubling that Judge Kavanaugh has repeatedly suggested that presidents should be above the law.”
Harris will continue to object to Kavanaugh’s nomination based on her meeting with him.
This flies in the face of Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), who somehow managed to pretend today that while Kavanaugh is against Roe V Wade and was nominated precisely because of this and the often accompanying special favors for the most wealthy among us (one functions as a mask for the other), he won’t be a threat to a woman’s right to choose.
“We talked about whether he considered Roe to be settled law,” Collins told reporters Tuesday. “He said he agreed with what (Supreme Court Chief) Justice (John) Roberts said at his nomination hearing, in which he said that it was settled law.”
Of course, Kavanaugh is a threat to a woman’s right to choose. Even if he doesn’t act on his belief that Roe V Wade is not right, he will undermine it by helping Republicans undermine Obamacare/ACA. And that’s when he’s not helping/conspiring to Keep Out of Jail the Criminal Enterprise that is the Trump administration.
No, this man is not fit for the highest court in the land, and Senator Harris is having none of the baloney Republicans are trying to pass off as actual vetting when they are allowing his own deputy to hand pick the documents you get to see.
