In a weekend interview with MSNBC’s Joy Reid, Rachel Maddow said that Donald Trump’s performance in Helsinki is an indication that the worst case scenario is playing out before our eyes.
Maddow said, “The basic question which I think rung so loud for everybody in the country this week was: ‘Is our president subordinate to a foreign power? Does our president answer to a foreign government and a foreign leader?'”
Trump’s behavior while standing next to Putin – and the unknown contents of his private meeting with the Russian leader – seems to have answered these questions.

Maddow said:
We’ve taken so many turning points, we’ve turned so many corners, we’re back where we started. The basic question which I think rung so loud for everybody in the country this week was: Is our president subordinate to a foreign power? Does our president answer to a foreign government and a foreign leader? And that private meeting with Putin where nobody knows what he promised or what he may have given away. The way that he responded to Putin when we saw him face-to-face and then the fact that he took under consideration all of these demands from Russia, including handing over Americans to Russia for interrogation. That just — you know, it makes the worst case scenario really palpable. The worst case scenario that the president is a foreign agent suddenly seems very palpable.
Wake up, America: The U.S. president is playing for team Russia
This is a dangerous moment for the country, and the American people need to wake up and stay engaged, particularly as we approach the critical midterm elections.
What Donald Trump showed us – and the world – in his summit with Vladimir Putin is that his loyalty doesn’t lie with his own country. Instead, it lies with himself and Vladimir Putin, who helped put him in the White House.
Patriotic Americans of all political stripes – particularly those in power – should be alarmed as the worst case scenario plays out before our eyes.
Phony finger-wagging and nonbinding congressional resolutions aren’t going to cut it. A president who surrenders his country to Russia should be immediately removed from office.
