WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. State Department said on Wednesday that assertions the Russian government has made about 11 U.S. citizens, including former U.S. officials, that it wants to question are “absurd.”
Asked about a White House comment that President Donald Trump was taking the Russian request under advisement, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the Russian prosecutor general was aware the United States had rejected Russian allegations.
“The overall assertions that have come out of the Russian government are absolutely absurd,” Nauert said. “The fact that they want to question 11 American citizens and the assertions that the Russian government is making about those American citizens – we do not stand by those assertions that the Russian government makes.”
