Donald Trump sounded like a scared child on Wednesday when faced with the prospect of a sit-down interview with Robert Mueller.
During an interview with Jeff Glor of CBS News, the president was asked whether he would meet with the special counsel as part of the ongoing investigation into whether the Trump campaign worked with Russia in 2016.
“There’s no collusion,” Trump responded, becoming visibly unglued. “I didn’t deal with Russia.”
Video:
The short exchange between Glor and Trump:
GLOR: You’ve said you’ll sit with the special counsel before. Has anything changed in the past six months to change your mind–
TRUMP: No, my lawyers are working on it. There’s no collusion. I didn’t deal with Russia. I had nothing to do with Russia with respect to my race. I won that race rather easily and I can tell you that I think, frankly, 2020, I think it’s going to be even better than we did in ’16.
GLOR: Are you more likely to sit for an interview now?
TRUMP: My lawyers are working on that. I’ve always wanted to do an interview because – look – there’s been no collusion.
Clearly, Trump has no defense when it comes to the increasing likelihood that his campaign coordinated with Russia to undermine the 2016 presidential election.
He may say he wants to sit down with Mueller publicly, but his lawyers – clearly recognizing that truth-telling is not a skill Trump has – are working overtime to avoid such a politically and legally suicidal situation.
In the meantime, Trump will continue claiming he’d love to talk to Mueller, all while shouting “no collusion” like a scared child.
His tantrums are convincing nobody – not the American people and especially not Robert Mueller.
