Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) said after being on a conference call with the Trump administration that it was clear that Trump doesn’t care about reuniting separated children with their families.
Video:
Sen. Hirono answered when asked by MSNBC’s Chris Hayes if the Trump administration cares about reuniting these kids and their parents, “No. Because if they really cared, they wouldn’t have done this in the first place and clear to most of us that they didn’t think that they would be forced to reunite these children to their parents. And so one of the questions I wanted to ask is when you impose a zero tolerance policy that requires the children to be separated, did you think about what it would take to bring them back together? No. It is clear they did not think that.”
Hirono later added, “They created this chaos and for them to not take any responsibility is par for the course. First, they create the chaos and blame Democrats or Congress or anybody else. They take no responsibility. And as they try mightily to bring these children back together who never should have been separated to begin with. So you know, you are right, this president engages in what started off as what I would characterize as dog whistle politics, calling Mexicans rapists and then first act as president was to impose a Muslim ban. What started as dog whistle politic to his base. It turned into a bullhorn. Every day he has to throw red meat to his base. The good thing is there are people coming together by the millions. And I say thank goodness that so many of us still believe in what this country stands for. That person who ran up the Statue of Liberty, they can’t take it that that woman looks to this as a symbol. They try to malign her, and anybody who disagrees with them.”
It is a damning indictment of this administration that they would have no intention of reuniting children and parents that they forcibly separated. It is even more telling that they don’t care about putting these families back together. The Republican Party used to call themselves the party of family values, but under Trump, they are the party of babies in cages and family separations. The Republican Party no longer with America. To be a Republican means to stand with Donald J. Trump.
