Kamala Harris Urges Democrats To ‘Play Hardball’ And Block Trump’s SCOTUS Pick

Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris called on her Democratic colleagues on Wednesday to fight Donald Trump and the Republican-led Congress as they try to fill Anthony Kennedy’s Supreme Court seat by the fall.

In an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, Harris said she plans to “play hardball” in order to block the president’s pick.

The rising Democratic star also told Matthews that she isn’t alone. She said “everyone is prepared” to fight the president tooth and nail on this issue.

Sen. Harris said:

Based on every conversation I’ve had with my colleagues so far this afternoon, everybody is prepared to play hardball. … We’re gonna have to fight to push it off. Listen, unlike Merrick Garland where there were eight months left in that term, there is four months. We’re four months away from an election. One-third of the United States Senate practically is up for election. The decision that we make is going to have generational impact. And the American people should be able to weigh in on who will be in this position on the United States Supreme Court. And let’s remember, Chris, this is not like Gorsuch where Gorsuch was about one conservative replacing another conservative. We fought on that one. I voted against him but he’s there. He replaced Scalia. This is about a swing vote. This is a different seat.

The stakes are high and the Democrats must fight

This is not the time for Democrats to compromise their values or start to waver. Those days should have vanished the moment Republicans hijacked former President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee.

It’s true that getting down in the mud is typically a sport mastered by Republicans. After all, the GOP cares more about one-upping their opponents and scoring political points than they do about running the government.

With the fate of the Supreme Court – and, of course, the country – on the line after today’s news, it’s time for that to change. It’s time for Democratic lawmakers to get in the ring, too.

As Sarah Jones wrote on Wednesday, directly addressing Democrats who are feeling demoralized: “Fight like a Republican, people. It is time to fight like conservatives do. Do not give up or give in in the face of defeat.”

Not only should Democrats fight like Republicans, but they should pull directly from the GOP playbook and block a Supreme Court nomination that this president has no business making.
