Trump’s cave exposes the fact that his blaming of Democrats and Congress for the child separations was a complete lie.
Video of Trump:
Trump said, “We want to keep families together. It’s very important. I’ll be signing something in a little while that’s going to do that. And the people in this room want to do that and they’re working on various pieces of legislation to get it done. But I’ll be doing something that’s somewhat preemptive but ultimately we’ll be matched by legislation, I’m sure.”
One day ago, Trump claimed that he needed Congressional authorization to end his own policy, “We want to solve this problem. We want to solve family separation. I don’t want children taken away from parents. And when you prosecute the parents for coming in illegally, which should happen, you have to take the children away. Now, we don’t have to prosecute them, but then we’re not prosecuting them for coming in illegally. That’s not good. We want to end the border crisis by finally giving us the legal authorities and the resources to detain and remove illegal immigrant families all together and bring them back to their country. We have to bring them back to their country. Now, think of all that aid that we give some of these countries. Hundreds of millions of dollars we give to some of these countries. And they send them up. Well, I’m going to go, very shortly, for authorization that when countries abuse us by sending their people up, not their best, we’re not going to give any more aid to those countries. Why the hell should we? Why should we?”
Trump ploy ends in humilation
Trump thought that he had leverage over the Democrats by taking child hostages at the border. He thought that he could direct the public outrage toward Democrats and force them to pay for his border wall. He was one hundred percent wrong. Democrats told Trump that this was his problem and he should fix it. The American saw straight through Trump’s lies and blamed the president while the press moved and rallied the country with outstanding reporting from the border.
Trump is still going to claim that he is tough on immigration, but the system worked. Trump isn’t a king or dictator, and when he tried to go too far, he was checked by the American people. The White House will be working overtime to spin it, but democracy won as the man who wants to be king was humiliated.
