The governors of Virginia and North Carolina became the third and fourth states to recall their National Guard troops from the border in response to Trump’s child separation policy.
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam ordered his state’s National Guard troops pulled from the border:
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper tweeted:
Cooper is a Democratic governor in a state that Trump carried in 2016 and Northam is the Democratic governor of increasingly blue Virginia. They have joined Republican Govs. Charlie Baker (MA) and Larry Hogan (MD) in pulling their National Guard troops in response to Trump’s child separation policy.
The governor rebellion is bipartisan. Trump could federalize the National Guard troops, but it is clear that there is a growing pushback that is noticeably absent from the Republican Congressional majority on Trump’s policy.
The state governors are leading where Republicans in Congress are failing, and the White House position is getting increasingly unsustainable.
The nation is outraged. The airwaves are filled with horrifying images, and any politicians that stand with the administration on this policy is signing their own political death warrant.
