Biden Unleashes On GOP In A Campaign-Style Speech That Should Terrify Trump

Former Vice President Joe Biden sounded a lot like a presidential candidate on Thursday, using a speech at the New York Democratic Party convention in Long Island to express outrage over what the country has become in the era of Donald Trump.

The former veep and potential 2020 candidate delivered a message that Democrats should run with: Values matter and Republicans have none.

“This is not your father’s Republican Party,” Biden said in the fiery speech, according to the Associated Press. “They are not who we are. They are not who America is.”

He said Republicans are “sending a vision of America around the world that is distorted. That is damaging. That is hurting us.”

Biden added: “This phony populism, this fake nationalism… It’s time to say ‘no more.'”

Joe Biden sounds a lot like a candidate

If Biden chooses to run in 2020, he would likely be well-positioned to defeat Trump – who lost the popular vote in 2016 despite winning the Electoral College and having some major assistance from Russia and the FBI.

According to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted in late March, the former vice president would fare better against Trump than any other Democrat.

PPP found that “Trump trails Joe Biden 56-39, Bernie Sanders 55-39, Elizabeth Warren 51-40, Cory Booker 49-39, Kamala Harris 43-39, and Kirsten Gillibrand 42-40.

If he runs, not only could Biden appeal to some of the midwesterners that voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 but stayed home in 2016, but the former VP can make a a strong values argument against the amoral Trump.

After all, Biden has dedicated his career to public service. He has the respect of both parties not just because of how he goes about his work, but for who he is as a person. He has never forgotten why he got into politics to begin with.

Trump, on the other hand, is a completely empty vessel. Not only doesn’t he have a clue about the complexities of public policy – domestic and foreign alike – but he lacks even basic human decency.

On Thursday, Joe Biden made it clear that taking on Donald Trump and his Republican appeasers is about more than the same tired political arguments. Instead, it’s about what kind of values we want the United States to project to the world.

With Biden as a messenger, that’s a contest Trump is likely to lose.
