Nancy Pelosi Demands Vote on Gun Legislation After Santa Fe Shooting

House Democratic Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) demanded a vote on gun violence legislation after the shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas.

Manu Raju of CNN quoted Pelosi as saying:

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas:

“It is disturbing and unsettling that we are bearing witness to yet another school shooting with multiple fatalities reported. Until Republicans in Congress stop blocking meaningful action on gun violence and instead work together to enact commonsense background check laws and ban the most deadly assault weapons, none of us can truly expect this carnage to lessen. That is a sad and heartbreaking fact we continue to live with in this country, one we should not have to live with. I pray again today, as I have too many times in the past, for the families of the victims, for the survivors, and for the courageous first-responders now at the scene.”

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan responded to the shooting with, you guessed it, a new version of thoughts and prayers. Ryan also touted a school security bill that does nothing on the issue of guns.

Ryan said in a statement, “Our hearts are filled with grief over this horrific loss of life. We are thinking of all the students, educators, families, and first responders affected by the attack at Santa Fe High School. No community should have to endure this. It is a tragedy. While we need to learn more about what took place here, it is urgent that we implement the reforms Congress recently passed to make schools safer and keep deadly weapons away from those who should not have them. This is a time to come together in support of the Santa Fe community.”

The contrast is glaring: Democrats are demanding action on school shootings, while Republicans are pledging to do nothing.

The choice in November is clear. Democrats will act for change on school shooting and gun violence. Republicans will do nothing. A vote to elect a Democratic Congress is a vote against more parents losing their children in school shootings.
