Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) made it clear on The Rachel Maddow Show that the House should be investigating Trump’s Chinese conflicts of interest, but they won’t due to having zero interest in Trump corruption.
Video:
Schiff said, “This is the whole point of the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. We shouldn’t have to guess what the president’s motivation. We shouldn’t have to wonder is the president doing this because of some unseen stratagem involving trade or national security, or is this because his family stands to benefit to the tune of who knows how many millions of dollars. We shouldn’t have to wonder. And he, like other presidents, should have divested of his business interests. His family members shouldn’t be using their positions of responsibility in the administration to further their own businesses. It’s exactly the problem that the Emoluments Clause was designed to address. And unfortunately, we should be doing an investigation of this in Congress. We should be doing oversight of this in Congress. But the committee that would be doing it, Government Oversight is chaired by Trey Gowdy. Although he brought us those endless Benghazi investigations, he has now decided that no longer the Clintons are no longer a target, there really isn’t any point in conducting investigations in that committee.”
Schiff was right. Republicans held endless hearings and investigations on Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or any variety of conspiracy theories that were being pushed by Fox News, but now that Trump is president and corruption is running wild, House Republicans have decided that there is no longer a need for hearings and everything is just fine. This is all about to change if Democrats take back the House. Even though Shiff will not be chairing the committee that will hold hearings into Trump’s conflicts of interest, you can bet your bottom dollar that they will be coming.
The Republican hypocrisy has not been forgotten, and if Democrats take back the House, they will work double time to catch up on the Trump investigations that should have been done.
