Rachel Maddow Blasts The ‘Remarkable’ Hypocrisy Of Melania Trump’s New ‘Be Best’ Kids Campaign

Rachel Maddow called it “remarkable” that the administration announced on Monday that they would take the children of undocumented immigrants from their parents and put them in shelters – on the same day that First Lady Melania Trump announced a new campaign dedicated to kids.

As Maddow noted, Mrs. Trump announced her new cause “within one hour of Attorney General Jeff Sessions announcing that it will now be U.S. policy to rip children out of the arms of their parents and lock them up.”

Maddow explained the stunning timeline of today’s announcements:

First Lady Melania Trump announcing as of 3:21 P.M. that she will be creating something called ‘Be Best’, which she described as an awareness campaign dedicated to the most valuable and fragile among us, our children. Less than an hour later, at 4:12 P.M., Attorney General Jeff Sessions gave birth to the second twin when he announced the United States government will officially pursue a policy of forcibly tearing children away from their parents and incarcerating the parents, putting kids in homes or shelters. Separating parents and kids against their will is now the announced proud policy of the U.S. government in terms of border enforcement. … So as the First Lady said, “Children deserve every opportunity to enjoy their innocence.” She said that within one hour of Attorney General Jeff Sessions announcing that it will now be U.S. policy to rip children out of the arms of their parents and lock them up. And it is remarkable, and it will be seen as a landmark moment that the U.S. government is announcing and pursuing this policy of literally taking babies away from their mothers. This is not like grown kids — like babes in arms, infants, toddlers, being forcibly taken from their parents is now U.S. government policy at the border.

Not the only scandal associated with the First Lady’s announcement

The fact that the Trump administration unveiled an anti-immigrant children policy less than an hour after Melania Trump launched her ‘Be Best’ campaign isn’t the only controversy associated with the announcement.

As Ryan Macc of Buzzfeed pointed out on Monday, Mrs. Trump’s program’s pamphlet is “almost the exact same thing” that was published under the Obama administration in 2014.

Clearly, Melania Trump never wanted to have the responsibilities that have been thrust upon her as First Lady. Her schedule is typically light and she hasn’t been a very high-profile presidential spouse.

Days like today – when a softball event to promote children was trampled on by her husband’s administration – are likely the reason why.
