Just when it appeared this week couldn’t get any worse for Donald Trump, a new report shows that the president and his allies have more reason to panic.
According to The Washington Post, “President Trump’s personal attorney Michael D. Cohen sometimes taped conversations with associates” and “allies of the president are worried that the recordings were seized by federal investigators in a raid of Cohen’s office and residences this week.”
More from The Post:
Cohen, who served for a decade as a lawyer at the Trump Organization and is a close confidant of Trump, was known to store the conversations using digital files and then replay them for colleagues, according to people who have interacted with him.
“We heard he had some proclivity to make tapes,” said one Trump adviser, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation. “Now we are wondering, who did he tape? Did he store those someplace where they were actually seized? . . . Did they find his recordings?”
…
On Monday, FBI agents seized Cohen’s computers and phones as they executed a search warrant that sought, among other records, all communications between the lawyer and Trump and campaign aides about “potential sources of negative publicity” in the lead-up to the 2016 election, The Washington Post reported.
There is no telling what could be on these potential recordings, but given Trump’s meltdown following the Cohen raids this week, it’s clear he is concerned about what the FBI was able to get its hands on.
Trump is so angry and afraid that he is reportedly considering firing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who gave a thumbs up to the raids of Cohen’s offices.
Overall, this presidency has been filled with one explosive revelation after the next – whether it’s about Trump’s effort to thwart the Russia investigation, his extramarital affairs or his family’s shady business dealings.
Any recordings of Cohen’s conversations with Trump could prove to be the final nail in this president’s political coffin.
As James Comey famously said in his Senate testimony last year, “Lordy, I hope there are tapes.”
