Speaking to reporters Monday, Trump responded to the question of why he doesn’t just fire special counsel Robert Mueller as the lead investigator in the Russia probe with an answer that sends even more warning bells to everyone who believes he should keep his job.
“Why don’t I just fire Mueller? Well, I think it’s a disgrace, what’s going on,” Trump said. “We’ll see what happens, but I think it’s really a sad situation when you look at what happened. And many people have said, ‘you should fire him.’ Again, they found nothing and in finding nothing that’s a big statement.”
Trump is getting increasingly panicky as Mueller’s investigation heats up and takes on a wider scope by the day.
Numerous Republicans have warned against firing the special counsel, but at the same time, most refuse to take action to protect him against the possibility by voting for a bill that would implement the necessary shields against the president.
Most legislators seem to agree that getting rid of Mueller would be “suicide” for Trump, but given his increasing worry and history of impulsively making erratic decisions, it’s nowhere near unfathomable that he still do so.
