According to a Sunday report from The Wall Street Journal, Kim Jong-un is now open to talks about denuclearization.
“The U.S. has confirmed that Kim Jong Un is willing to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” a White House official told the newspaper.
Trump and the North Korean leader are reportedly planning on meeting for a face-to-face discussion, though some people in Trump’s camp doubt it’ll ever happen.
The offer to meet was made by North Korea in March and was delivered to Trump by a South Korean delegate.
The two men have spent the past year throwing grade school insults at each other (Trump has described Kim as “short and fat” and nicknamed him “Rocket Man,” while Kim has referred to Trump as “Dotard”) and many people think a meeting between the to of them is a disaster waiting to happen, with some experts arguing that Trump is being manipulated by Kim and playing right into his hands.
Trump and his supporters, on the other hand, have been going around touting the planned meeting as a diplomatic victory. Hopefully, if it does happen, other adults will be in the room to stop them if World War III rhetoric starts up.
