Rep. Maxine Waters Tears Into Trump: Trade War With China, Not Immigrants, Will Cost U.S. Jobs

Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters of California turned Donald Trump’s anti-immigration argument upside down on Saturday, saying that it’s the president’s escalating trade war with China that will hurt U.S. workers, not immigrants.

In an interview with MSNBC’s Joy Reid, Rep. Waters said the tariffs Trump is imposing on Chinese imports – and the subsequent response from China – is “going to hurt a lot of folks.”

The Democratic congresswoman tore into the president’s trade war:

Everybody knows that this president is a liar. … He’s continuing with this business of these immigrants are coming to our country and they’re causing us problems. They are taking the jobs and they’re costing the government money. He has to continue this kind of talk as he dog whistles to his constituency. … We export billions of dollars in pistachios and almonds and wine. They are really worried. Our grape growers are really worried about what is going on with this president. He keeps saying he is not creating this trade war, but he really is. He’s announcing more and more tariffs. It’s going to hurt a lot of folks. It’s going to cause a lot of loss of jobs. This president, again, is just on a rampage without knowing what he’s doing.

Trump’s trade war – not immigrants – will hurt American workers

Donald Trump continues to tell his supporters that immigrants are a threat to workers and the economy broadly, but it’s his own policies that will do the most damage.

As Rep. Waters noted on Saturday, workers and farmers are becoming increasingly worried about how Trump’s tariffs will impact them and their businesses. Markets are tanking, too.

Across the country, some of the states that were key to his slim Electoral College victory over Hillary Clinton will be hit the hardest. As Bloomberg noted, China’s retaliatory tariffs are “targeted at states, particularly in the Midwest, where Trump’s support is strongest.”

Aside from the economic damage, the report adds that it could do severe political damage to complicit Republicans in this year’s midterm elections by “potentially shifting control of statehouses and the U.S. Senate to Democrats.”

From the start, Donald Trump’s campaign promises were rooted in his own ignorance of the issues. A wall to keep out immigrants and a trade war with China sounded appealing to many low-information voters in depressed economic areas of the country – no matter how unfeasible or stupid the ideas were and continue to be.

Now those same voters who were conned into supporting this sleazy reality TV star are going to be hurt the most.
