Town halls are happening in Congressional districts across the country on Saturday to call for changes in the nation’s gun laws, but Republican House members are largely hiding and not showing up at these very public events.
Here is a report on the town hall in the Virginia district of Rep. Barbara Comstock from MSNBC:
Huffington Post reported that no Republican accepted an invitation to appear at a town hall, “But their Republican counterparts failed to accept a single invitation to a Town Hall For Our Lives, causing the bulk of the events to be planned as “empty chair” town halls, in which the invited lawmakers aren’t expected to show up.”
Republicans have been getting called out on social media for accepting NRA cash while refusing to appear at the town hall:
The town hall for our lives is an event that was inspired by children who don’t want to be shot at school. That’s what this is really about. Kids have decided that they are no longer going to accept living in fear of gun violence, and they have decided to do something about it. Republicans are hiding from their own constituents all across the country. They are afraid to stand up and defend the NRA and their votes against saving lives. Republicans are afraid of kids. They can’t look these kids in the eye and spout the NRA talking points that portray the Second Amendment as untouchable.
Republicans can’t face the truth, so they hide.
Voters see them, and their game of hide and seek will come to an end on Election Day in November.
