Speaking to CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Tuesday, Republican Pennsylvania Rep. Charlie Dent called out legislators in his party for their hypocritical responses to the scandal of Bill Clinton’s infidelity during his presidency compared to how they’re responding to Trump’s scandal involving Stormy Daniels, a porn actress whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.
“A lot of folks were pretty darn alarmed and outraged and had a strong voice about it, saying ‘character counts,’” he said. “Now that the shoe’s on the other foot, a lot of those same folks are pretty damn silent.”
Clifford says she and Trump had an affair in 2006, just months after his wife Melania had given birth to their son, Barron. Clifford also claims she was paid $130,000 and signed a nondisclosure agreement during the 2016 elections to keep quiet about the relationship.
When asked what he thinks of the way some Republicans and evangelicals have defended Trump by insisting they elected a political leader and not a pastor, Dent said he felt it was a weak argument.
“I don’t know how many in the evangelical community can reconcile some of their positions at this moment,” Dent said. “They seem to be more concerned about someone who embraces their policies on a public level as opposed to maybe living by a personal code that they would find objectionable.”
The one positive thing Dent had to say about Trump was that he approves of his decision to stay uncharacteristically quiet on the scandal.
“It’s not a bad strategy. It seems to me that the less he says about this, the better,” he said. “I think he should frankly use this strategy more often on more issues, particularly with respect to… Director Mueller. He should be silent.”
