Nine of the ten Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee did an end around on Trump by sending letters to top five DOJ officials who would move up if Attorney General Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein were fired or removed asking them not to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Read the letter below:
The letters came after the Senate co-sponsors of the Special Counsel Integrity Act, Sens. Chris Coons (D-DE) and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) released a bipartisan statement warning Trump to back off of Mueller, “We have heard from constituents — Republicans, Democrats and independents alike — who agree that Special Counsel Robert Mueller should be able to conduct his investigation without interference. This should not be a partisan issue,” wrote the senators. “We introduced the Special Counsel Integrity Act because we believe that the American people should have confidence in the Department of Justice’s ability to conduct independent investigations and its commitment to the rule of law. We urge President Trump to allow the Special Counsel to complete his work without impediment, which is in the best interest of the American people, the president and our nation.”
Congress is worried that Trump is going to make his move to fire Mueller while they are on their Easter break, which is why Democrats and some concerned Republicans aren’t waiting for Trump to act. The letters were a clever way to go around Trump and make it more difficult for him to fire Mueller.
The message is being sent to Trump that if he fires Mueller impeachment is on the table.
If Trump wants to go there, Democrats are preparing for an impeachment fight.
