A new Politico report reveals that even Republican legislators are frustrated with Trump’s inability to focus on one issue for longer than a few days. He frequently picks a certain policy to push through but then abandons it, with gun control being the most recent example.
The inconsistency is reportedly giving lawmakers “whiplash” and keeping up with the president is impossible.
“It’s unbelievable to me,” said Maine Sen. Susan Collins. “The attention span just seems to be … it’s a real problem.”
“We kind of have attention deficit disorder,” said Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana.
Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin said Trump is “all over the place — 15 tweets in 19 hours,” adding that “trying to keep up with where his mind lights from day to day is hard.”
Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown disagrees with the notion that Congress is unfocused and said that the problem of a “short attention span” only appears when the policy issue at hand isn’t something that appeals to the special interests of the GOP.
“Congress has a very adequate attention span when it comes to helping special interests,” he said. “It’s things that the public wants, [but] that the interest groups that run the Republican Party don’t want where the attention span is short.”
Thanks to Trump’s inability to get anything done and Republicans’ lack of concern for actually helping their constituents, it’s unlikely anything positive will come out of Congress any time soon.
