John Dean, a former White House counsel who served during Nixon’s years in office, took to Twitter on Saturday to give his thoughts on what the testimony of former Trump campaign adviser Rick Gates could do to the administration.
“Mueller is throwing everything he can against Manafort, including Gates who can nail him,” Dean wrote. “Increasingly it appears Manafort is the link to Russian collusion. If Gates can testify that Manafort was acting with Trump’s blessings, it’s the end of his presidency. That’s substantial.”
Gates is the latest former Trump campaign staffer to plead guilty to charges filed by Mueller. He was charged with for lying to the FBI about his communication with Russians and for conspiring against the United States — one count for each crime.
Gates’ decision to plea guilty is part of a deal with Mueller and investigators, and he’s agreed to “fully, truthfully, completely, and forthrightly” cooperate with the probe.
If Gates decides to act in his own best interest rather than cover for Trump, especially if he specifically testifies that Trump approved of or directed the illegal things he and former foreign policy director Paul Manafort did, it could very well mean impeachment for the president.
It’s definitely not a good sign when a lawyer who worked during the possibly the biggest scandal a president has ever had thinks your administration’s days are numbered.
