Lauren Hogg, a 14-year-old high school student who survived the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida two weeks ago, is the latest person to point out that if Melania Trump really wants to start a campaign to fight against cyber-bullying, she should really be starting with the people closest to her.
“Hey @FLOTUS you say that your mission as First Lady is to stop cyber bullying, well then, don’t you think it would have been smart to have a convo with your step-son @DonaldJTrumpJr before he liked a post about a false conspiracy theory which in turn put a target on my back &created a safe space for people all over the world to call me and my family horrific things that constantly re-victimizes us and our community,” Hogg wrote in a set of tweets on Friday. “I’m 14 I should never have had to deal with any of this and even though I thought it couldn’t get worse it has because of your family.”
The tweet Hogg references Trump Jr. liking was a post accusing her brother, David Hogg, who also went through the shooting and has since become one of the tragedy’s most visible survivors to push for stricter gun control legislation, of being a crisis actor. The conspiracy theory has already been debunked as a hoax.
Even before her husband won the presidency, Melania Trump has been ridiculed for picking cyberbullying as the issue she most wants to combat as first lady. With President Trump being infamous for insulting others on social media — his list of victims is extensive — Melania’s campaign is hypocritical to the highest degree, especially since she has never even hinted at having made suggestions that he stop. Her campaign launched last September, but it still largely remains a mystery as to how exactly it plans to stop online harassment.
