Doug Zeif, the father of Sam Zeif who survived last week’s shooting in Parkland, Florida, slammed gun advocates for grossly “misinterpreting” the Second Amendment and continuing to create an environment where constant mass shootings take place.
In an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, Doug Zeif said, “Our founding fathers would be rolling over in their graves if they knew how far our society has fallen from the values they put forward in the 1770s.”

The exchange with the father and son duo:
DOUG ZEIF: The interpretation of our Constitution is what’s critical here. And how our founding fathers I said this earlier, our founding fathers would be rolling over in their graves if they knew how far our society has fallen from the values they put forward in the 1770s.

SAM ZEIF: I’m in complete agreement. The second amendment was — it was put in place for defense, not offense. The Second Amendment was so that you could walk and feel safe with protection. But not to walk around with an AR. You don’t need to walk around with an ar to feel safe. You walk around with an ar to kill people. That’s what happened. That’s what’s been happening. And when is it going to end?
The Second Amendment has been increasingly misinterpreted over the years as the gun lobby looks for new ways to increase their bottom line and become more influential in a country already awash in firearms. To them, it doesn’t matter who owns a weapon or what weapon they own. They simply want as many people to get their hands on as many deadly firearms as possible.
That’s why, despite having supported some reasonable safety measures in the past, the NRA has become increasingly opposed to them in recent years: Universal background checks, banning suspected terrorists from owning a gun, and now raising the age to possess an assault weapon to 21 – all smart measures that the NRA opposes as their interpretation of the Second Amendment becomes more extreme.
As the Zeif men pointed out on Thursday, the country’s founders are rolling over in their graves at all the ways the blood-stained gun lobby has subverted the Constitution in order to increase profits and pay off politicians.
Meanwhile, all across America – in big cities and small towns – thousands of our citizens continue to be needlessly gunned down.
