Former CIA director to Trump: “Your insecurity is well deserved, as is your concern over Russia investigation.”

Ex-CIA director John O. Brennan slammed President Trump on Twitter after he claimed that he’s been tougher on Russia than Obama was.

“I have been much tougher on Russia than Obama, just look at the facts,” Trump tweeted. “Total Fake News!”

In response, Brennan wrote, “It never ceases to amaze me how successful you have been making yourself so small, petty, and banal with your tweets. Your insecurity is well deserved, as is your concern over Russia investigation. Thomas Paine was right when he said, ‘These are the times that try men’s souls.'”

Given that Trump has refused to impose any new sanctions on Russia and continues to praise Putin, it’s obvious that Trump expects his supporters to take his claim that he’s been tough on Russia at face value — kind of like how he took Putin’s words about not interfering with U.S. elections at face value.

In fact, his own White House transition team was concerned about sanctions Obama imposed on Russia in December 2016 as a form of punishment for their interference in the election. “If there is a tit-for-tat escalation Trump will have difficulty improving relations with Russia, which has just thrown U.S.A. election to him,” wrote transition team staffer K.T. McFarland in an email to a colleague.

Trump’s tweet is just the latest attempt to convince the public that he’s not in bed with the Russians. With a string of new indictments and former members of his campaign pleading guilty to perjury and other crimes, though, the walls are closing in on Trump and it’s clear his hands aren’t clean.
