At least one Republican thinks it would be a massive mistake for the president to stop special counsel Robert Mueller from completing the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to sway the 2016 election.
Sen. Susan Collins of Maine appeared on CNN’s “New Day” on Tuesday and discussed the possibility of Mueller being fired.
“It would be a devastating development if Mr. Mueller were in any way impeded in completing his investigation,” she said.“It is absolutely essential that he be allowed to complete it. He is a person of great experience, impeccable integrity, whose appointment was praised by both sides of the aisle, and he has to be allowed to finish his work.”
The New York Times recently reported that Trump tried to have Mueller fired last June and only gave up on after White House lawyer Donald McGahn threatened to quit rather than carry out Trump’s order.
Collins isn’t the only Republican who recognizes the impact that terminating Mueller would have — South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham has also spoken out on the matter.
“It’s pretty clear to me that everybody in the White House knows it would be the end of President Trump’s presidency if he fired Mr. Mueller,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”
