Democrats Win The First Battle For DACA As Senate Votes To End Shutdown

Senate Democrats gave up nothing and got a vote on DACA. If Republicans don’t keep their promise by February 8, the government could shut down again. Democrats still have their shutdown leverage and forced Republicans to cave on their threat not to negotiate on immigration.

The more liberal elements of the Senate Democratic caucus voted against the motion, but the deal was s clear movement toward the Democratic direction. Schumer got a vote on DACA by February 8, by making McConnell set up a process that triggers consideration of a DACA automatically on February 8 if no DACA bill agreement is reached.

Democrats won. They got a pathway to passing a DACA bill.

Paul Ryan took immigration off of the table. Donald Trump took immigration off the table. Mitch McConnell took immigration off the table.

Now, there is going to be a vote on DACA.

There is no way to look at this process and not see a win for Democrats. Trump failed his first test as president. The Republican Congressional majority failed their first test of being able to handle a crisis.

Democrats won.

Mitch McConnell said on the Senate floor that shutting down the government over the issue of illegal immigration was not a good strategy, but given the way that this situation has played out, the opposite is true.

Republicans are now going to forced to deal with an issue that they don’t want to touch. The Senate vote was the end of the war, but it was a victory for those who are trying to keep the Dreamers legally in the US.
