Sen. Jeff Flake Issues A Stunning Warning That The Republican Party Is Dying Under Trump

Sen. Flake (R-AZ) said that the crowds that turn out for Republicans are the spasms of dying party and that the anger of older white men can only carry the GOP so far. He added that voters have figured out that the Republican Party stands for nothing else.

Video:

Flake was asked by ABC’s Jon Karl if Republicans could lose the House and Senate.

He answered, “Most definitely. Most definitely. When you look at some of the audiences cheering for Republicans sometimes. You look out there and say, those are the spasms of a dying party. When you look that the lack of diversity sometimes. And it depends on where you are, obviously. But by and large, we’re appealing to older white men. And there are just a limited number of them. And anger and resentment are not a governing philosophy. So you have to actually govern and do something. Sooner or later, the voters will figure out, I think they are and have, that, you know, you have to have something else.”

Flake is right in the respect that the Republican Party is dying. It has been dying since the Astroturf Tea Party movement took control of the party rank and file. The Republican Party has been pushing out moderates and true fiscal conservatives and replacing with self-selfing windbags (Ted Cruz, Donald Trump) and corporatist ideologues (Paul Ryan) for years. What is stunning about what Sen. Flake said is that he pointed directly to the real reason why Republicans are moving towards extinction.

Demographics are the reason why the Republican Party is doomed. There are voter ID laws in Alabama, and the Democrat still won because African-Americans came out to vote for Doug Jones. There is only so that gerrymandering and voter suppression can accomplish. The changing tide of demographics will eventually become too much. The Republican dam is going to break, and as Flake suggested, there aren’t enough angry old white men to keep Republicans in power.

Donald Trump wasn’t a great turning point. He was the last gasp of a dying party. Jeff Flake can see what is becoming obvious. The Republican Party is living on borrowed time under Donald Trump.
