Dozens of former elected Republican officials and former federal prosecutors are rallying to defend Special Counsel Robert Mueller against attacks from Trump and his allies.
20 former elected Republican and senior officials wrote in a letter organized by the Project On Government Oversight, “Special Counsel Robert Mueller deserves the support of all Americans. As Republicans and/or conservatives, including those who have served in elected and appointed positions, we reject recent efforts to discredit him. These efforts undermine the institutions that protect the rule of law and so our nation. Mueller must be allowed to complete his investigation without interference.”
Another letter organized by the Institute For Constitutional Advocacy and Protection at the Georgetown University Law Center was signed by 22 former federal prosecutors:
When people talk about the constitutional crisis that will follow if Trump fires Mueller, this is exactly what they are talking about. The Fox News Trump Republicans who are leading the attack on Mueller are making a lot of noise in an effort to turn the Russia investigation into a partisan issue, but if the President fires the Special Counsel, he is going to drive a wedge straight through his own party.
Most Republicans don’t support Trump’s attacks on the Special Counsel, and if Trump fires Mueller that day will send the country into chaos and it will also be the last day of a functional Trump presidency.
There are some good Republicans out there, and their voices are growing louder in defense of Robert Mueller.
