Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) announced that he would resign at the end of the year, but he also pointed out the irony that he is leaving the Senate while Trump sits in the White House, and Roy Moore runs in Alabama.
Video:
Franken said, “Today, I am announcing that in the coming weeks, I will be resigning as a member of the United States Senate. I of all people am aware that there is some irony in the fact that I am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office, and a man who has repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party.”
Sen. Franken made it clear that wanted to let the Senate ethics investigation play out, and that line about not getting support from his party suggests that he feels pushed out. However, Sen. Franken could have stayed. He is not getting expelled. There wasn’t a vote to throw him out of the Senate. If he really did nothing wrong, he should stay and fight.
Al Franken is going to remain a powerful voice on the left, and one suspects that he may not be finished in politics.
His takedown of Trump and Roy Moore showed that there is still a ton of fight in Sen. Franken.
