Latest Polls Show Accused Sexual Predator Roy Moore Back in the Lead in Alabama

After the Washington Post published a report detailing accusations of sexual assault made by multiple women against judge Roy Moore, who’s currently running to be Alabama’s next senator, the Republican’s numbers took a hit in the polls and put Democrat Doug Jones in the lead for a few weeks. But four new polls show Moore regaining ground and give him an overall lead of 3.2 points, as calculated by RealClearPolitics.

Alabama is one of the most consistently red states in the country. It hasn’t had a Democratic senator for 20 years — Howell Heflin, in office from 1979 to 1997, was the last — and the number of Democrats who currently hold statewide office is zero. And while there are more people in Alabama who believe Moore’s accusers than those who don’t, it’s not by a huge margin — 42% versus 38%.

An estimated 50% of Alabamians are white evangelicals, a group which mostly favors Moore. In fact, after accusations were lodged against him in early November, 37% of Alabama evangelicals said that they were even more likely to support the Republican as a response to the allegations. Another 34% said the accusations would make no difference to their voting decisions.

Like Moore, Trump is also strongly supported by white evangelicals, with 80% voting for him over Hillary Clinton. On Monday, Trump explicitly endorsed Moore on Twitter.

“Democrats refusal to give even one vote for massive Tax Cuts is why we need Republican Roy Moore to win in Alabama,” he wrote. “We need his vote on stopping crime, illegal immigration, Border Wall, Military, Pro Life, V.A., Judges 2nd Amendment and more. No to Jones, a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet!”

He continued, “Putting Pelosi/Schumer Liberal Puppet Jones into office in Alabama would hurt our great Republican Agenda of low on taxes, tough on crime, strong on military and borders…& so much more. Look at your 401-k’s since Election. Highest Stock Market EVER! Jobs are roaring back!”

While the race is still a tossup, the latest polls show how imperative it is for Democrats — and anyone against putting an accused pedophile on office — in Alabama to vote for Doug Jones.
