Donald Trump Just Basically Endorsed Alleged Pedophile Roy Moore

On Tuesday, when asked about the senatorial race in Alabama between Democrat Doug Jones and Republican Roy Moore, who’s been accused of sexual assault by numerous women, President Trump responded, “We don’t need a liberal democrat in that seat.” He added, “Roy Moore denies it— that’s all I can say.”

Trump additionally failed to rule out the possibility that he might campaign for Moore. “We’ll have to let you know next week,” he told reporters.

Trump’s comments come the day after his senior adviser Kellyanne Conway appeared on Fox News to say pretty much the same thing. Conway responded to questions about whether the administration wants the people of Alabama to support the Republican candidate by first highlighting their goal to pass the GOP tax bill, characterizing the media as hypocritical for its coverage of Democratic Sens. Al Franken and Bob Menendez, and finally by attacking Moore’s opponent for being liberal.

“The guy Doug Jones is a doctrinaire liberal,” she said. “I just want everybody to know Doug Jones. Nobody ever says his name, and they pretend that he’s some kind of conservative Democrat in Alabama, and he’s not.”

When asked if Trump would be campaigning, Conway said there was “no plan to do that” but didn’t explicitly shut down the possibility.

Moore has been accused of sexual assault and harassment by at least five women, including two who claim the incidents took place when they were minors. Leigh Corfman told the Washington Post she was 14 years old — Moore was 32 — when he approached her outside of a courtroom and asked for her phone number while her mother was busy at a child custody hearing. The Post’s report described two instances in which Moore allegedly sexually abused Corfman.

Alone with Corfman, Moore chatted with her and asked for her phone number, she says. Days later, she says, he picked her up around the corner from her house in Gadsden, drove her about 30 minutes to his home in the woods, told her how pretty she was and kissed her. On a second visit, she says, he took off her shirt and pants and removed his clothes. He touched her over her bra and underpants, she says, and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear.

While some Republican legislators have denounced Moore, the Alabama GOP has decided to support him. It’s not surprising to see Trump join Republicans in Moore’s state. He has, after all, been accused of sexual assault by over a dozen women and continues to insist that they’re all liars.
