Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT) was practically begging voters not to toss the Republican majority out of office by asking people to give them until Christmas to get something done.
Video:
Stewart said, “The legislative calendar, look we know it’s been busy. We didn’t get health care done the way we wanted to do. Tax reform is difficult. It wasn’t something we expected to be finished with by the weekend, and we knew that it would take a little time, so you’re right. We haven’t had the legislative accomplishments to date, but I think we will. Give us til Christmas, and then let’s look back and see what we’ve accomplished and then let’s keep going next year.”
The excuses that Rep. Stewart made may be the worst argument for a party keeping their House majority that I have ever heard. Republicans had years to come up with policies and proposals on healthcare and taxes. Rep. Stewart’s come down to Republicans admitting that they were unprepared and didn’t understand that they would be required to actually do things now that their party controls the federal government.
Republicans aren’t going to get tax reform done and signed by Christmas.
President Obama signed more major pieces of legislation during his first 100 days in office (the stimulus, the Lilly Ledbetter Act, and an expansion of the CHIP program) than Republicans have managed to pass and enact during their entire first year controlling government.
Voters can give Trump and the Republican majority until Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or next 4th of July. Their inability to govern isn’t going to change.
If Rep. Stewart’s answer reflects the pitch that Republicans are going to make to voters in 2018, the GOP is totally screwed.
