Democrats have not only announced that they will be donating Harvey Weinstein’s donations to women’s charities, but they also turned the moment into a slam on Trump for disrespecting women.
The DNC told The Daily Beast, “The DNC will donate over $30,000 in contributions from Weinstein to EMILY’s List, Emerge America and Higher Heights, because what we need is more women in power, not men like Trump who continue to show us that they lack respect for more than half of America.”
Republicans will never be able to criticize Democrats for anything involving behavior toward women because Donald Trump is their president. It was less than 24 hours after the Weinstein scandal broke before Trump rolled back contraceptive coverage for women. Trump has shown that he respects no one, but himself. Democrats are doing the right thing by donating Weinstein’s contributions.
The party should be doing more than donating contributions. The 2016 Democratic presidential primary revealed that there is a sexism problem in the party, just as there is a sexism problem in American culture. Sexism is the one form of discrimination that has doesn’t raise the same level of public outcry as racial discrimination, religious discrimination, or discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Republicans have no credibility on these issues, and while dissing Trump is nice, a party that fully walked the walk on the issue of discrimination would be even better for the country because the other side is being led by a man who brags about sexually assaulting women.
