Donald Trump promised to veto Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) Medicare For All bill because he loves America and refuses to let all Americans have health insurance.
Trump tweeted:
Trump who is under investigation for colluding with Russia during the 2016 election thinks that every American having health insurance would be a curse upon the country. Trump’s tweets are straight out of the playbook that Republicans plan to use against Bernie Sanders if he ever wins the Democratic presidential nomination. Trump and the Republicans plan to paint Sanders as un-American, and they have a whole powerful argument ready to go.
It is warped, but what the President is arguing is that taking health care away from people is the American way, and he is promising that as long as he is president, there will be no universal access to health care.
Trump is arguing against his own people having access to healthcare as if it is an American value to be held hostage by insurance companies.
The President’s clumsy tweets show why single payer will be an impossible sell to the bulk of the country. They also provide an opportunity for Democrats as they reveal that the Republican Party deeply committed to the wrong side of the health care issue.
Bernie Sanders’ Medicare For All bill will never get a vote in Congress, but as long as Republicans hold the position that people should lose their health insurance, health care will be a winning issue for Democrats.
