Congress Just Sent Trump a Resolution Forcing Him to Condemn White Nationalists

Congress just sent President Trump a joint resolution forcing him to condemn and use all available resources to address white nationalists, neo-Nazis, the KKK, and other Charlottesville type hate groups.

The bipartisan resolution passed the Senate Monday and the House Tuesday by voice vote. It was introduced in the Senate by Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-VA), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and a companion version with identical language was introduced in the House by Reps. Tom Garrett (R-VA) and Gerald Connolly (D-VA).

The resolution was prompted by the domestic terrorist attack in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 11 and 12th. The joint resolution will now be sent to President Trump’s desk to be signed by the man who supported and defended neo-Nazis and white supremacists after one of them murdered an innocent person.

The joint resolution (S. J. Res. 49) demands that Trump not only condemn white nationalists, white supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis and other hate groups, but calls upon him to use all available resources to improve data collection on hate crimes and to work in a coordinated way to address the growing prevalence of hate groups.

It describes the murder of Heather Heyer as a “domestic terrorist attack.”

“Our nation’s elected leaders have a responsibility to stand up to forces of hatred and bigotry wherever they may be found. What happened in Charlottesville was domestic terrorism perpetrated by white supremacists who tragically cut short the life of a young woman, Heather Heyer, and led to the deaths of two Virginia State Police troopers Berke Bates and Lt. Jay Cullen. The United States Congress has spoken up with one voice to recognize the lives of those we lost, to unconditionally condemn racist speech and violence, and to denounce the white nationalists, neo-Nazis, the KKK, and other hate groups,” said the Senators in a statement sent to PoliticusUSA upon the passing of the joint resolution.

“We hope that President Trump will move quickly to sign this resolution and commit his Administration to address the rise of hate groups.”

This is something Congress actually accomplished in a bipartisan manner that is absolutely necessary.

It is beyond pathetic and disgraceful that this President needs a bipartisan resolution to force him to condemn neo-Nazis and white supremacists.
