Minutes After Irma Warning, Trump Calls Filibuster Rule “Repub Death Wish”

If you’re prone to second hand embarrassment, take heed.

Minutes after warning people about dangerous major Hurricane Irma that killed 19 people and is heading toward Florida, President Trump moved seamlessly into calling the filibuster rule the “Repub Death Wish!”

Yes, just minutes.

A shout-out for the “Federal G,” Trump has turned the response of the federal government into a hurricane cheer.

This early morning tirade invited mocking, as is usual for unfiltered Trump thoughts:

It’s hard to say if Trump is reacting like this because he’s embarrassed that he caved to Democrats (that is, to give the country what it needed — same thing these days) or he is still petty mad at Congressional Republicans. Or both.

One thing is sure, and that is that Trump is just like his base. They wanted someone just like them, and they got it. He doesn’t understand the job. His anger over the filibuster rule makes him look like a child to everyone who has a third grade level grasp of our government.

Trump should have expected healthcare to be tough to pass.

But President Obama managed to pass a much tougher piece of legislation. Tougher because it was new, it was longer, and it changed healthcare — it was a beast of a piece of legislation. Obama pushed it up the hill with Pelosi and Reed. They just kept going until it was done. They took a year to listen to people and make changes, tweak it. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a huge improvement and it saved lives.

The Washington Post explained for those still laboring under the idea that Democrats used reconciliation to pass Obamacare, “The Senate did not use the reconciliaton process to pass the ACA. The act, comprising 906 pages, is the basic comprehensive substance of Obamacare. It was passed on a bill that was filibustered, and a supermajority vote of 60 was required to end that filibuster (by invoking cloture under Senate Rule 22). It was signed by the president on March 23, 2010, and became Public Law 111-148.

The Democrats played by the rules in 2010 in overcoming a filibuster to first pass the ACA, and then using the reconciliation process to pass a second bill making strictly budgetary changes in existing law. The Republicans played by the rules this time to likewise make budgetary changes in existing law.”

Donald Trump just segued from a hurricane that killed 19 people and is “one of the most dangerous Atlantic storms in a century” to mocking Republicans over a Congressional rule he’s dubbed “Repub Death Wish!”

It is not the Senate filibuster rule that is making Donald Trump a legislative failure of a president. That is what he tells his base and perhaps what he believes. But it is not true.

More importantly, why doesn’t Trump ever pause to even consider the purpose of the rule. This failure exemplifies the very reason Donald Trump is not fit to be President. Trump is calling the filibuster rule, the rule that is meant to keep one whacked out party from going nuts, a “Repub Death Wish!”

If the rules are a Republican death wish, Republicans are on the wrong side.

The rule that might serve as a speed bump lest an idiot dictator be put into power by a foreign power with his party leading both chambers and drunk on the power instead of patriotism – this is the rule Donald Trump is mocking Friday morning as Irma barrels down.
