Senate Democratic leader, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called on Trump to disband his Election Integrity Commission, or Democrats will try to end it for him via legislation in September.
Lost in all of the Trump chaos, Schumer tweeted after Charlottesville:
And if @POTUS won’t disband the Election Integrity Commission, @SenateDems will try to do it on a must-pass bill in September.
— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) August 24, 2017
The leader of the Senate Democrats expanded on his plan in a post on Medium, “If the president wants to truly show that he rejects the discrimination agenda of the white supremacist movement, he will rescind the Executive Order that created this commission. And if the president does not act, the Congress should prohibit its operation through one of the must-pass legislative vehicles in September. Many of us found the Election Integrity Commission distasteful when it was first created. The president’s recent failure to unequivocally condemn bigotry makes its rescission imperative.”
One of the things to watch for during the debt ceiling and other must pass legislative fights in September will be what Democrats try to attach to the legislation that Republicans must pass. A fight is brewing over Trump’s voter fraud panel, and with Trump having so few allies in Congress more than a few Republicans would be happy to kill Trump’s voter fraud commission if it meant the bipartisan and veto proof passage a hike in the debt ceiling.
Democrats may not be in power, but they are taking advantage of every opportunity that comes along to derail Trump’s despised agenda.
