A new Morning Consult/Politico poll shows that the American people have soured on the Republican led government after the party’s efforts to repeal Obamacare, as Democrats hold a seven point lead on the generic congressional ballot.
Morning Consult reported, “In the new survey, 44 percent of registered voters said they would vote for a Democratic candidate for Congress if the election were held today, compared with 37 percent who said they’d back a GOP candidate. That’s a 7-point swing in Democrats’ direction since last week, when voters were split at 40 percent for each party. Most of the movement toward the Democratic side of the ballot was driven by independents: 34 percent said they’d vote for a Democrat, up 4 points from last week, while 25 percent said they’d opt for a Republican, down 4 points.”
The Morning Consult/Politico poll has been more favorable to Trump than most. Trump’s approval rating in this poll is at 42%, which is higher than any other recent poll. It hasn’t taken the American people long to regret their choice to give Trump and the Republican Party total control of the federal government. Republicans and Trump have accomplished nothing in more than six months with the exception of making it clear to anyone who is paying attention that their goal is to wreck health care.
The other Republican goal is the passage of massive tax cut for the wealthy, which will only serve to make Democrats more popular before the midterms. If one were sit down and write a playbook for how to lose control of Congress, Republicans and Trump are devising the perfect blueprint.
Democrats will have a tough mountain to climb in 2018, but success will rest not in trying to come up with new slogans, but in great candidate recruitment and listening to voters, who are already telling Democrats what they want. Voters don’t feel like their interests are being represented by Trump and the GOP, so the Democratic message is right there in front of them. Democrats need to tell voters that they will fight for their health care. They’ll fight to raise wages and create better jobs, and they’ll say no to Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthy.
Congressional Democrats don’t need a catchy slogan. They just need to fight.
