Trump is still trying to get Obamacare repealed, but there’s just one problem. Senate Republicans have moved on, and are ignoring the President.
According to The Daily Beast:
Trump held talks on Monday with Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, ostensibly to convince him to get his home state senator, John McCain, to drop opposition to the last Senate bill. And an administration official told The Daily Beast that, “the President wants the Senate to act by fulfilling its promises to repeal and replace Obamacare.”
Senate Republicans announced nearly two weeks ago that they were going to hold bipartisan hearings on stabilizing the insurance market in September. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is moving on to tax reform. There is a bipartisan group of Senators who have met to try to come up with a compromise to fix Obamacare. Repealing the ACA looks dead for now.
Everyone seems to understand this with the exception of Donald Trump.
Senate Republicans got the message. If they repeal Obamacare, they will be kissing their careers goodbye. If the choice is between a president that they have no loyalty to, and keeping their seats, the Senate Republicans are going to pick their seats.
Trump can urge, demand, meet, tweet, and tantrum all he wants, but Republicans aren’t going to play along.
In fact, they are flat out ignoring their own president.
