Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein (CA), the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee warned Trump that if he fires Jeff Sessions, it will be the beginning of the end of a short presidency.
Video:
Feinstein told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, “Jeff Sessions has done nothing to deserve termination, and I don’t always agree with him, that’s true, but I really disagree with using him as a political pawn if the President can transfer him to Homeland Security, but if the purpose is what many of us think it is, and that’s to stop the investigation of Bob Mueller and his team, that will not work, because I believe that will be something that none of us can condone and could very well be the end of this short presidency.”
Feinstein went on to say that, even though she didn’t want it to happen, this is the red zone and no president should enter it fully without knowing what the repercussions are.
The line in the sand has been drawn. If Trump fires Sessions, or reassigns him, or does anything to get him out of the way, he will be staring down the slippery slope that leads to impeachment.
Sen. Feinstein didn’t use the i-word, but under our constitutional system, there is only one way for Congress to remove a president from office.
The message was clear. If Trump fires Sessions, he will kick off a constitutional crisis that could end in impeachment.
