A key Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee said on Saturday that firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller would be grounds for impeaching Donald Trump.
In an interview on MSNBC, California Rep. Ted Lieu said, “No one is above the law, including the president.”
Video:
Lieu said, “Democrats believe that that is grounds for impeachment because that’s exactly what Nixon did. And the lesson from Watergate is that no one is above the law, including the president.”
He added, “It’s clear that Robert Mueller is getting closer. We don’t have just smoke now, we’ve got fire in this Russia investigation. The June meeting last year with this email chain that Donald Trump Jr. authenticated – that shows collusion. The Trump campaign was informed in black and white emails that the Russian government was helping the Trump campaign and they had dirt on Hillary Clinton. That is evidence of collusion.”
The Democrat’s comments come as Trump is openly threatening Mueller and floating the possibility that he will find a reason to force him out. In other words, the White House doesn’t like how quickly the Russia investigation has escalated into a full-blown dumpster fire, and it’s looking for another way to throw the train off the tracks.
Luckily, as Lieu’s comments indicate, Democrats will not allow Trump to get away with it, and it’s likely that if the president finds a way to force Mueller out, some good Republicans will say enough is enough, too.
The Trump administration has gone completely off the rails, and the odds of impeachment seem to increase with each passing day.
