Despite being smack in the middle of the Trump administration’s so-called “Made in America” week, Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort filed a new request on Thursday to hire dozens of foreign workers.
Their rationale for the request? They can’t find any qualified American workers to work as housekeepers and restaurant employees at the resort.
According to the documents, which were first reported on by BuzzFeed, the president’s club in Florida “is asking the government for permission to hire 70 temporary foreign workers.”
This comes as Trump continues to tout his self-proclaimed “buy American, hire American” agenda during a week that’s supposed to outline policies that would benefit U.S. workers.
As BuzzFeed also noted, “Since Trump launched his presidential campaign in June 2015, businesses owned by him or bearing his name have sought to hire at least 370 foreign guest workers under H-2B program and a similar one called H-2A, including more than 230 for Mar-A-Lago and the Jupiter club.”
The Washington Post also reported on Thursday: “Earlier this year, the Trump Winery near Charlottesville, Va., applied for visas to hire 23 foreign workers under a different visa program meant for farm workers.”
One top Democrat blasted the made-in-America hypocrisy on Thursday, saying that Trump has “failed to put forward a single bill to support job creation or domestic manufacturing” during his six months in office.
“If President Trump is serious about restoring American manufacturing and supporting the creation of jobs,” Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer said. “He should work with Democrats to advance our Make It America plan to create the best conditions for American businessmen to innovate, manufacture, and create jobs here in the U.S.”
At the end of the day, most folks have been able to see through the president’s phony rhetoric on this subject, but it appears the Trump himself has given up pretending to care about American workers – even during “Made in America” week.
