The Russia scandal is breaking apart the Republican Party as the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) fumed at the Trump administration during an interview on Fox News.
Video:
Gowdy said, “If you had a contact with Russia, tell the special counsel about it! Don’t wait until the New York Times figures it out!….Someone needs to get everyone in a room and say, from the time you saw ‘Dr. Zhivago’ until the moment you drank vodka with a guy named Boris, you list every single contact with Russia.”
Rep. Gowdy also discussed the real reason why Republicans are frustrated with Trump, “There is a political component to it, which is: Here you are in mid-July asking me about Russia, and it’s not your fault that you’re doing it, but that’s how another week is starting here, so that’s a political concern. You’re not here to ask me about infrastructure or tax reform or anything about that.”
Republicans in Congress aren’t worried that the Russia scandal is going to hurt them with their base back home. Most Republicans don’t believe that the Russia scandal is real. What Republicans are terrified of is returning to their districts and having no accomplishments to run on in 2018.
House Republicans already know that they are going to lose seats next year, but what terrifies them most is the idea that the midterm could turn into a bloodbath if they have the majority and the White House and come home with zero accomplishments.
Trump has few allies in Congress who are loyal to him. If Republicans in the House and Senate come to the conclusion that they are better off without Trump, they will toss him aside. The cracks are beginning to appear in the Republican majority. Trey Gowdy expressed publicly what many Republicans are thinking privately. If Trump can’t get the Russia scandal under control, it will be Donald Trump that will need to go.
