After protesters at 150 “March For Truth” protests across the country demanded an investigation into Donald Trump and his Russian ties, including spelling out “investigate Trump” on the National Mall, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi praised the “courageous voices” of the people taking to the streets to demand answers and facts, saying House Democrats were behind them and would not “stand down.”
“Today’s courageous voices taking to the streets to protect our democracy are sending a strong, clear message to Trump, Paul Ryan and Republicans: you will not hinder the people’s power to demand answers and facts wherever they may lead to – we will March For Truth and not stand down,” the Democratic House Leader said.
“Since December 2016, House Democrats have been calling for an independent, outside commission through our Protect Our Democracy Act led and introduced by Congressmen Eric Swalwell and Elijah Cummings,” Leader Pelosi (D-CA) said in a statement sent to PoliticusUSA. “Every single House Democrat has endorsed the independent commission, voted for Trump to release his tax returns, and every single House Democrat is in solidarity with every person marching today for the truth.”
Pelosi asked what the the President and Republicans are hiding by obstructing a truly independent investigation and enabling Trump to keep his tax returns hidden from the people even as concerns about his financial ties to Russia grow.
“As I have said before, what do the Russians have on Trump personally, politically and financially that he is keeping the truth and his tax returns secret from the American people? Americans have even more questions: What financial and national security decisions is Trump making based on his relationship with Russia? Are his transactions with the Russians damaging American workers’ pocketbooks? If the President and Republicans have nothing to hide and aren’t scared of the truth, then they should welcome a commission to investigate the Trump-Russia connection and remove all doubt of a possible cover-up.”
Thousands marched for “truth” Saturday to let Trump and Republicans know that they are paying attention and engaged and they aren’t going to let our democracy be undermined silently.
Trump was so upset about the “March for Truth” being bigger than his “Pittsburgh not Paris” rally (aka, a ‘stroke Trump’s ego for exiting the Paris climate accord’ rally that was held in DC on the square named after a French aristocrat who helped Americans in the Revolutionary War — you literally can’t make this stuff up about this White House — and not Pittsburgh, and during which Trump was golfing), that he tweeted a fake news story about his rally size.
Pelosi is keeping the House Democrats united in calling for an independent commission and transparency regarding Trump’s tax returns.
A majority of Americans, including a rising number of Republicans, want to see a truly independent commission, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. “According to the poll, 59 percent of adults, including 41 percent of Republicans and 79 percent of Democrats, agreed that ‘Congress should launch an independent investigation into communications between the Russian government and the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.'”
Reuters quoted John Kremer, a Trump supporter whose concern grew into wanting an independent investigation after Trump fired Comey, “I really don’t know what to believe anymore. If Comey hadn’t been fired, I would have been comfortable with the results of their investigation. My concern now is whether he (Trump) is trying to minimize the investigation.”
The Democrats aren’t just speaking up for their base, they’re speaking up for concerned citizens of both parties and Independents.
Trump and Republicans can hide under the Info Wars blankets all year, but the people are not going to rest until the facts are unveiled and if they keep this up, Democrats will be able to run on patriotism and protecting democracy in 2018. Whereas, Republicans will be left with their usual fear-mongering about Pelosi, Clinton and Obama — even though two of those people are no longer able to serve as reliable scapegoats. Yes, Republicans are planning to “run against Pelosi”, as if somehow the minority leader has Wonder Woman powers that have enabled her to stop them at every turn from actually governing to match their promises. Due to the House rules, this particular phony narrative is even more empty than it appears on the surface.
At some point Republican voters are going to ask if Republicans have the White House and both chambers of Congress, why are they so impotent that Nancy Pelosi has stopped them from enacting their agenda. This question, together with a hint of patriotism, will not play well for Republicans.
