Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters was fired up on Thursday, telling MSNBC’s Chris Hayes that “Rome is burning” in the wake of the James Comey firing and Donald Trump “needs to be impeached for obstruction of justice.
“We’re fiddling while Rome is burning,” she said. “This president needs to be impeached.”
Video:
I’ve said all along that he will lead us to impeachment, and he’s doing just that. Every day, more and more is unfolding. I told you that I thought there was a Kremlin clan and these were his allies. I had a resolution back in February that said he should be investigated for collusion. … If we do the investigation, everything is there. We’re fiddling while Rome is burning. This president needs to be impeached. I believe that. I believe there was collusion. We need to get on with the business of doing real investigations.
Waters has been one of the toughest critics of Trump since he took office in January, often referring to the president and his Russia-linked associates the “Kremlin clan.”
While Trump apologists have often dismissed her fiery attacks on Trump, each passing week seems to bring about another revelation that confirms her concerns about the administration. The firing of James Comey – a clear attempt by Trump to derail the investigation into his team’s Russia ties – is just the latest shoe to drop in a closet full of them.
The media may finally be taking this scandal seriously after wasting the entire campaign season focusing on Hillary Clinton’s emails, but it’s time for Republican leaders in Congress to join Waters and other Democrats and give it the attention it clearly deserves – especially after the Comey fiasco.
If the scandal continues on this trajectory and the president continues to throw wrenches in this important investigation, impeachment proceedings won’t be far behind.
