Texas Republican Prays to God to Forgive America for the U.S. Constitution

People for the American Way‘s “Right Wing Watch” tells us that at the annual “Washington – A Man of Prayer” event, held in Statuary Hall inside the U.S. Capitol, Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) prayed to his god to forgive America for the “sins” of Women’s Reproductive Rights and Marriage Equality.

Because what Weber wants to do is substitute his religious beliefs for our constitutionally-guaranteed right to choose, what the Texas Republican really did was beg his god to forgive us for following the United States Constitution as the law of the land rather than the Bible and the few cherry-picked “commandments” he thinks actually apply.

The First Amendment of that Constitution, of course, says he cannot do that.

The occasion was an appalling celebration of absurdity and complete ignorance on Weber’s part of his own Bible’s stance on both marriage and abortion. Weber’s Bible doesn’t mention anything about “traditional marriage” and his god ordered mass abortions of women in captured cities on repeated occasions.

We are told that “Modifying the Lord’s Prayer to declare that ‘thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth here in the halls of Congress,’ Weber confessed the ‘sins our nation has been so emboldened to embark upon’ and pleaded with God to forgive us.”

“We have endeavored to try and kick your word out of public schools. Father, we have endeavored to take the Bible out of classrooms, the Ten Commandments off the walls. Oh, Lord, forgive us. Father, we think we’re so smart, we have replaced your word and your precepts with drug-sniffing dogs, with metal detectors, with uniformed police officers in our schools. Oh, Lord, forgive us.”

Apparently, Weber agrees with the Religious Right’s spiritual head, David Lane, who infamously referred to the United States Constitution as “the wrong train.” You know, because the Constitution is a secular document and for purposes of U.S. law, supersedes the Bible Weber hasn’t read but about which he likes to speak in gratuitous ignorance.

He got all emotional talking about marriage:

“Father, we have trampled on your holy institution of holy matrimony and tried to rewrite what it is and we’ve called it an alternate lifestyle. Father, oh Father, please forgive us.”

Well, let’s take a look at “traditional marriage” in the Bible:

If he was all emotional before, he actually wept when he lied about what the Bible says about abortion:

“Lord, we have gone to killing the most innocent amongst us. Your servant Moses warned in Deuteronomy 19 for us to choose life so that we and all our descendants might live. Father, we’re killing our descendants and we’re calling it a choice. Oh, God in heaven, forgive us, please.”

Tears were certainly called for, but not for the reasons expressed by Weber. The Bible’s stance on the pre-born is nothing less than appalling:

I refer Weber to 2 Kings 15:16: ”He [Menahem, king of Israel] sacked Tiphsah and ripped open all the pregnant women.”

Speaking of killing “the most innocent among us,” I refer him also to Hosea 9:16: “Yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb,” and to Hosea 13:15-16, and this is God himself speaking now:

“I will have no compassion…the people of Samaria…will fall by the sword; their little ones will be dashed to the ground; their pregnant women ripped open.”

And to Numbers 31:17-18:

”Now, kill all the boys. And kill every women who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.”

Obviously, some of those women who have slept with a man are going to be pregnant. Killing them will kill their fetuses. And of course, all post-born fetuses are also killed, except virgin girls, who will not remain virgins for long but will become rape victims and slaves.

Oh, those family values.

Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t think Weber’s Bible says what he thinks it says.

Weber might want to flip that Bible open on occasion and actually read it, instead of cherry-picking passages to suit the needs of the moment.

The United States Constitution that doesn’t even mention a god – any god – is the law of the land, Randy. If you want to cry about something, cry about that.
