Trump’s Russia Cover-Up Is Crumbling As Americans Don’t Trust Congress To Investigate

An essential piece to the White House’s Russia cover-up plan appears to have been relying on allies in Congress to stonewall or sidetrack investigation, but a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll has found that only 16% of Americans want Congress to handle the investigation.

NBC News reported, “Seventy-three percent of respondents prefer the independent investigation, versus 16 percent who pick Congress. Still, a majority of Americans — 54 percent — believe that Congress should investigate whether there was contact between the Russian government and the Trump campaign, which is essentially unchanged from February’s NBC/WSJ poll….A combined 61 percent of Americans say they have little to no confidence in Congress conducting a fair and impartial investigation into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election. Only a combined 39 percent say they have “some” or a “great deal” of confidence in Congress conducting a fair and impartial investigation.”

Republicans in Congress are being dragged into Trump’s Russia scandal, and the polling indicates that they are about to pay a big price with voters if they are viewed as covering for Trump. The NBC/WSJ poll also suggests that Democrats could have a powerful point to make with voters in 2018. If Democrats want to take back Congress, they should run on a platform of authorizing an independent investigation into the Trump/Russia scandal.

After the way that the White House tried to use Rep. Devin Nunez (R-CA) to assist in the spreading of false information and cover-up, using the Republican majority in Congress to make Trump’s scandal go away looks like it was always part of the plan.

The American people have seen through the con, and they are going to vote for candidates who promise an independent investigation. The Russia scandal isn’t going away, and a key part of the cover-up has been discredited in the eyes of a majority of Americans.
